MR. JOHN DONOVAN, KA KARAMEA.
" The ' Patea Press ' records- wifih regret the death" of Mr.*" John Donovan, w.ho . passed- 'away at Kakaramea, on Jahuaiy 2fc. The deceased was born in County Limerick - in 1840, and when a young - man 'joined the Royal Irish j Constabulary, and- after a few - years, in, that force resigned," and came, out "to New Zealand, in . the middle of - the sixties. After spending some -lime, on the West Coast goldfields he - joined, the Armed Constabulary, and. subsequently became a merri^ . ber of the. Forest Hangers', and., with that corps participated in the chase of Te Kooli. ' At Ihe conclusion of. the .Maori troubles he joined the police force " under Commissioner Brannigan, - and after a .short service in Auckland was promoted to J,he .ranlc of " sergeant. Later on , he ' was stationed at- the Bay* of ls-u , lands and Patea, 'returning to Auckland in 18*9. He resigned from the police force' in 1592. "When leaving Patea, after eleven Tears' service, at >a largely attended public meeting, he was presented '-by - the^ citizens? w&h a1 varuibl'j gold watch and : chain; and address. Some years ' ago he . went to live ' on his farm at ■Kakaramea, where he had resided -until ' his - death. The ."deceased was highly respected wherever he was stationed,; an.l gained the. esteem -of all classes for impartial mau;i(;r in which he discharged his duties.
