DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN
There was Exposition of -the Blessed .Sacrament at St. Joseph's Cathedral on Sunday from, last " Mass until Vespers. In the evening the usual procession took place. ' " - •"- The St. Joseph's Harriers met at" Maori Hill on Saturday, and starting from- the Council Chambers a course "was taken towards the reservoir, up the hills at the -* back, thence to the left, and down on to the Wakari road arid across the -links back home. The course chosen by the captain was an ideal one, and the long stretch of dry weather helped, to make the run most enjoyable. _ " On Wednesday evening of last week a large number of friends and members of St. Joseph's Ladies' CluW assembled at a musical evening and ~ euchre party" in . St. Joseph's Hall in order to make a presentation to *Mr. C. Fottrell. After refreshments, kindly provided by the ladies, and" a small musical programme had been disposed of, - ithe Rev. Father Coficy, Adm., in an appropriate speech, asked . Mr. Fottrell to accept a small purse oL gold which the ladies and friends had subscribed in recognition of the many kindly services he had rendered to the club. Mr. Fottrell suitably replied.A pleasing little function took- place at the Benevolent Institution on Friday evening last; ,jw hen, -on the occasion of Mr. and Mrs. Mcc having .completed .their twentieth anniversary T as master, and' matron of the institution, the "opportunity * was taken by the "employees and inmates of fine home to present :: them with an address and - purse . of . sovereigns >as a small token . of esteem. . The address briefly referred to the interesting event, and .was read by Miss Turner," of the <house .."staff. „ T.he presentation was - made by Mrs. Blair. Mr, Mee -returned- thanks on behalf of himself and wife, .and, _in a few well * -'chosen < and appropriate remarks, he referred to - the_ kindly,,, spirit which prompted them- to recognise his and ' his wife's twentieth anniversary as. master and matron of the institution. Mr. E. Mcc, jun., briefly ■ returned thanks on behalf of the "other members of the family." To celebrate -. the occasion Mr. and Mrs. Mcc .kindly provided a plentiful" supply of buns and cake, a kindness -very much appreciated ' by the inmates,. '"''" i The St. Clair * Comedy Company produced Lcstooq's three-act' farce, * Jane,' in St. Joseph's Hall *on Friday evening. The performance was in aid of the hall funds. -Although the company is composed solely of amateurs, the production was on a much higher plane than is generally reached by non-profes-
sionals, in fact very few professional companies would appear to such advantage, as the acting throughout was really good, _ and the; play went from- start to finish with a swing which could only result from carefiU study and rehearsal, and undoubted talent. Where, all did so well it would be invidious to mention the names'^- of any .as worthy of .special "praise. The farce abounds. in humorous situations, "and the -dialogue -is bright and " witty, -so that all- through the piece the audience were kept highly amused. The : following, was the cast of characters :— Charles Shac-. kleton, Mr. J. Easther ; Mr. Kershaw, Mr. T. J. Pemberton ; William Tipson, Mr. A, R.- Gardner ; Pixton, Mrr. C, N. v . Baldry ; Claude, Mr.~ B. Petre ; Jane, Mrs. Mac Knight ; Mra. - fbadwitk, Miss D. Easther'-; ' Miss Norton, Miss M.,. Muir ; Mrs. Pix,ton, Miss R. Petre. The " incidental- ' music was • capably played by Mrs. Petre, and Mr. A. 'R. Gardner made an admirable stage manager. • The piece was staged and mounted in a manner ~ which - . left -nothing to^be desired. ~- •- - ' ""
