Convent of Mercy High School, South Dunedin

The annual distribution of prizes to the pupils of St. Philomena's Convent of Mercy High School, South 'Dunedin, took place on Wednesday afternoon. The Rev. Father Howard presided. A capital entertainment, which bore convincing testimony to the excellence of the musical training imparted by the Sisters of Mercy, was given by the pupils. During the year 20 candidates had been presented for the Trinity College examinations in practical and theoretical music, and all had passed successfully. This was encouraging alike to teachers and pupils. At the recent concert parents had ample proof of the progress their children are making, and on this occasion fresh proof was given that this progress isi steadily maintained. Miss Maggie Cunningham opened the programme with a pianoforte solo, after which Miss I. Carrhody displayed considerable his- ' trionic ability in a recitation. Misses Winifred Marlow, Gertrude Carmody, Mary Ilanley, Irene Carmody, and Maggie Neylon gave an exhibition of club-swinging which reflected credit on their 'nstructress, Miss Mowat. The pupils followed with a spirited rendering of the pretty chorus ' Music of the birds. 1 After presenting the prizes the Rev. Father Howard addressed the pupils. He congratulated them on the good work done during the year, evidenced by the fact that so many beautiful premiums had been awarded by the Sisters. Though but a short time in South Dunedin, he had seen enough of the children to convince him that they were as distinguished for good conduct as convent children he had known in. other places. In conclusion he wished them a happy Christinas and a pleasant vacation. The following is the prize list :—: — Christian doctrine.— Senior division (medal)— Maggie Neylon.
