An Fnglisn exchange reports iihat Miss Maud MacCarthy, tho violinist who achieved such success during the past season in her orchestral concerts, conducted by Herr Stembach, 'has been engaged to go to the United States for a series of fifty concerts during the winter season, 1906-7. The directors of the South British Insurance Company had a very pleasant tale to tell the shareholders at the annual meeting in Auckland last week. The premium income was £297^821 l(is, being an increase of £13,420 as compared with the previous year, whilst tho interest from rents amounted to £25,324, being an increase of over £5000. After adding £10,000 to- the reinsurance fu'nid tihere remained a balance at credit of tho revenue account of £50,770 13s lid. The special bonus of IDs peir share paid to sh'aretoold'ers in October 'last absorbed £32,314. Deducting this from last year's balance there remained £37,724 8s 2d. This sum, added to the bialaince brought down from the revenue accoiunt, gave a total of £88,495 2s Id, which, with the proceeds of unallotted shares, made the total amount at credit of profit and loss account £133,278 2s 9d. This sum was allotted as follows : Carried to paid-up capital account, £35,37>2 ; to reserve fund, £30,000 ; sinking funds of sundry leaseholds, £3 GO ■ written off office furniture, £433 14s 2d ; October (1904) and April (1905) dividends, £23,809 18s ; ltetauvin'g a baiteurace of £43,302 10s 7W, out of which the directors recommended the payment of a dividend of 2s 6d per share for the halfyear just ended. The assets now total the handsome sum of £548,095 15s Bd. The results of the year's work show the highly satisfactory position of the company, and bear testimony to careful management....
