Tho Feast of the Nativity ol the Blessed Virgin, Septemlber 8, being the- 21st anniversary of the arrival of his Eni'mence the Cardinal on Australian sibores, tho 'Catholic Record' states • — To-day -he is 1 t'toe mast prominent personality m Australia, and there is none who is more respected Throughout the great archdiocese which he has been appointed to administer there are abiding memioriaJs of his energy and zeal, and in every department of his sacred ministry he has worked with t<he enthusiasm and tireless activity of a pioneer In purely secular matters his Eminence has given ancxani'plo of \ast loarmnig, of patriot/ism, of prudence, and of statesmanship. And if there is one tilling more than another for which his countrymen of Irish blood will gratefully thank his Eminence, it is that by his learning and' patriotism and force of character he has inmsistodi oin( tho uplifting of every Irish cause in Australia, that tho Irishman, be he rich or poor, has a noble tradition >to be pi'oml of, and deserves, equally wifh men of otihor nationalities, the respect of those who in the early days of Mie century affected to despise eveiy thing Irish. The following; statistics speak most eloquently for the work done by the Cardinal in the archdiocese of Sydney In 188tf there were, besides the Archbishop, 100 priests, of whom 5U were seculars and 11 legulars. In 1 883 there were 78 teaching religious Brothers,; in 1905 the number is 171 In ISS'-t the nuns uere 252 , in 1905 they number 111.'? In 1 883 the number of children attending 'Catholic schools was 10,980 , in 1903 they are 23,171. In JHB3 the chapels and churches in the arch-
diocese were 120 ; now they number 240. In 1883 there were 5 Catholic institutions of charity ', mow the number is 24. This is a noble record to look back upon, and we trust that his Eminence will be spared for many years to add yet more to his golden list of good wanks for religion and charity. With his Eminence on the occasion of his coming to Australia was associated, as private secretary, Right Rev. Mgr. O'Haram. As already stated, his Eminence has marked the occasion by handing to Dr. O'Haran a Papal Brief appointing him Protrtio&otary Apostolical.
