The Catholic Literary and Debating Society held their second social on Wednesday evening, August 9, in St. Mary's Schoolroom. The Rev. Father Aubry presided, and there was a very large attendance. The programme presented was a pleasing one, every item being encored. Vocal solos were contributed by Misses Malfroy, White, Stapleton, Hyams, Doherty, and Mr. Kalfe, pianoforte duets By the Misses Sullivan and Misses Bock and Daly, recitations by Messrs. M'Cullough and Sellers, and a step dance by Mr. Morrissey. A farce concluded the programme. During an interval refreshments were handed round by the ladies. Before the gathering dispersed Rev. Father Aubry thanked the audience for their attendance and the performers for their services. There was a fair attendance al the weekly meeting of the Cattiolic Literary and Debating Society held last evening, Mr. St. George being in the chair. An interesting debate took place on the question, ' Htove we too many local h-idies ''' The affirmative wide was led by Mr. Moloney, whilst Mr. McKay championed, the negatne A number of members took part in the debate which proved very instructive, and at the conclusion, a vote was taken which resulted in favor of the affirmative side. The chairman complimented the junior me tubers on their marked progress, the number who took part in the discussion showing that the good work of the Society is bearing fruit.
