Greymouth
(From our own correspondent.)
August 10
The addition of the tower and spire to St. Patrick's Church, Greymouth, is now approaching completion. The massive brickwork of the tower and porches, gives a most imposing appearance to the solid struc ture, one of the few brick buildings on the Coast. Th\; graceful spire in woodwork is to be slated, and already lifts itself in admirable proportions. As the church itself is on an elevation, the cross will stand high over everything else in the town. From the open sea it will be a conspicuous" object.
About fifty members attended the St. Columba. Club's usual weekly meeting on Monday night. For a vacancy on the committee there were three nominations. The ballot resulted in favor of Mr. T. Ryan. During, the evening the chub's orchestra played two overtures. Songs were given by Messrs. Fraser, F. McCarthy, T. O'Do'herty, R. Phillips, and M. Phillips, instrumental items by Messrs. F. McCarthy, R. Phillies, and Master Peterson, recitations by. Messrs. J. McGrath, P. Smyth, Snow, and Fraser.
A euohre and ping-pong tournament was held in th«> St. Columba Club rooms last Thursday evening between the members of St. Columba and Trinity Clubs. After refreshments had been partaken of several musical items were rendered, including songs by Messrs. Fraser, Doogan, Cocks, and G. Sweetman, instrumental selections by Messrs. R. Phillips and W. Geog-hepan, and a rec ltation by Mr. P. Smyth, all of which were greatly appreciated. Before breaking up, Mr. G. W. Sampson (president of the Trinity Club) returned thanks for the hospitality extended to them, and wished the club every success.
It is with extreme regret I have to record the death of one of the pioneers of the Coast, in the person of Mr. Michael Ward, of Nelson Creek, which took place at his brother's residence, Bondigo (Victoria), on July 20. Deceased le°ft here about three months ago to visit fhis relatives in Victoria. The late Mr. Ward was well known and highly respected throughmit the Grey Valley, and his dea/th will be sincerely mourned \)V his m«uny friends. The deceased was a practical Catholic ana an enthusiastic Irishman, and his; kind actions will long be remembered on the Coast The deceased was a natlive of County Clare, Ireland, and was 67 years of age.— R.l.
