July 6. The Right Rev. Mgr. Mackay, who was visiting Te Aroha, came to Auckland last Saturday, He left for the South via the West Coast last Monday. Rev. Father Meagher, of De\onport, preached on devotion to the Sacred Heart last Sunday night at St. Patrick's. Negotiations are in progress for the acquirement of a hall, vitb a line piece of ground attached, at Birkenhead. The Bishop intends it for a school and church. The asphalting in front of the Cathedral is now finished, ami presents a nice appearance. The Bishop is deserwng ot the hearty thanks and, above all, the hearty support ot his people in this highly necessary ■work of improving the Cathedral. His Lordship the Bishop attended the Sacred Heart Church, Ponsonby, last Sunday, in honor of the feast of the/ Sacred Heart, and ■preached there. The Vincent de Paul Society held a matinee yesterday* in St. Patrick's Hall, and it was most successful. In anticipation of the mission by the Redemptorist Fathers in September next a census is being taken of St. Patrick's parishioners by the clergy of the parish. At the meeting of the local branch of the H.A.C.B. Society last Tuesday evening four new members weio initiated, and the following officers elected for tho ensuing term :— President, Bro. M. J. Shoah'an ; vicepresident, Bro. John O'Brien ; secretary, Bro W. Kane; treasurer, Bro. D. Flynn ; warden, Bio. T. Pound ; sick visitor, Bro. C« Mulholland ; guardian, Bro* A. Walsh. It was decided to commemorate the thirty-sec-ond anniversary of frhe opening of the branch with a social gathering towards the end of July. Last Monday evening a most successful entertainment was held in the Sacred Heart Schoolroom in aid of the the school improvement fund. The evening was opened with a lecture on phrenology Vocal items were capitally rendered by Mrs. Wen/el Scholium, and Messrs. P. B. Darby and Arthur Dob-bsi The Very Rev. Egan convulsed the audience with a humorous reading. The entertainment closed with a farce, m which the parts were sustained by Mrs. W. Scholium and Messrs. W. E. Darby, J. MCjDermott, J- Corbett, and J. B. R. Stead.
