June 12. A presentation took place in the sacristy last "Friday week after devotions, when Master M. O'Meeghan, on behalf of the altar boys, asked Father Le Floch, their chaplain, to accept a 'handsomely mounted serviette ring, as a testimony of their respect and esteem. Some new candidates for Parliamentary honors artcoming forward in this district for the next election. Mr. W. Jeffries, a prominent and popular Temuka gentleman, will contest the Geraldine seat, and Mr. Rolleston, of the legal firm of Tnpp and Rolleston, Timaru, will probably stand against the Hon. W. Hall-Jones for the Pimaru representation. A prominent young Catholic, Mr. J. Connor, left here for Christchurch last week, on promotion from the Timar.ii branch to the head oflice of the N.Z. Flour Millers' Association. Prior to his departure Mr Connor was the recipient of a handsome presentation from his many frietods. At the meeting of the Hibernian Society on Tuesday night, in accepting his resignation as assistant secretary, it was unanimously agreed, on the motion of Mr. M. F. Dennehy, that the "branch express its regret at losing tho services of an efficient officer, and it wished him e\ery success in the City of the Plains. The Friendly Societies of this town are to be congratulated on the good feeling and brotherhood which exists among them. To foster and strengthen thr* 1 desirable state of things and also to help to pass the winter e\enings, they have subscribed for a challenge cup to be competed for in a card tournament, the winninp, society to hold it for one year, to become its propertyaltogether if won twice in succession or three times at intervals. The Hibernians played their first match against the Foresters on Thursday last in I/ard's Tea Rooms, and won by seven games. Bro Dennehy for tho Hibernians and Bro. Whyte for the Foresters called for three hearty cheers far their opponents, and a pleasani e\ening was brought to a close by light refreshments.
