It will not 'be the fault of the Government, and especially of the Agricultural Department, if the poultry industry does not assume very large proportions in this Colony in the near future. Since the Government took this industry in hand increased attention has been paid by small settlers and others lo the matter, whilst the quantity anid quality of poultry of the Colony have been greatly improved. The authorities are doing everything possible to educate the people to a knowledge of the proper and profitable management of poultry, their latest effort in thus direction being the issue of an 80-page pamphlet, entitled ' Poultry and Eggs for Market and Export,' by Mr. D. D. Hyde, chief poultry expert. This publication contains a great amount of information of interest to poultry-breeders, and be especially useful to those about to start a poultry-yard and without the technical knowledge which is accessary to make the venture a success. The ' San Francisco Call ' reports the death of the Rev. Father W. J. Madden, who was well known m Auckland ana Wellington provinces. The deceased priest was for some years connected with St. Patrick's Cathedral, Auckland, and was for three years pastor of Kaikoura,. in the archdiocese of Wellington. In its report the ' Call ' says .— ' The Rev. Fathe-r W. J. Madden, chaplain of Providence Hospital, Oakland, died at the institution on Friday, May 5. Death terminated an 11ness of four months, and was airectly due to dropsy. Father Madde^ although he nad been attached to the Providence Hospital but a short time, was widely known in California. He was formerly pastor of the Catholic church at Modesto, from which he retired about a year ago owing to ill-health. As a priest he was legarded as a man of high literary ability, ana was the author of several works, most notable among them being ' Christian Reaction Against Agnosticism," and a book of sermons. Deceased was a natue of Cork, Ireland, and fil years o? af;c. He had two or three of his works published in New Zealand, one beinp " Disunion and Reunior " ' A Requiem Mass for the repose. of the soul of the deceased was celebrated in. the Sacred Heart Church, Kaikoura, on May 24.— R.1.
