TJhe 'hirtdstome new church in Pnveroargiill is fast approaching completion. The dome is now being covered^ and at good idea of the soaring height and line proportions of tflie new building can now be obtained. A ba&aar was (says a local correspondent) held in the Atlhenae»iim Hall, Cromwell, on Decennber 26 and 29, and wias a great success financially and otlierwise. A sipleindid assortment of beautiful and useful articles was exposed o-n the various stalls, the ladies superintending them Uoing a brisk trade on both evenings. The lolliowilng ladies were stalMioldws :— RiKilna; Stin stall : Meisdames Kerin and Thomas ; Hartley ajitd Riley stall : Mesldames Goodger and Shimbles ; Rise and Shine stall : Mesldames Lister and Donnelly ; Electric stall : Mrs. D. A.- Jolly ai<d Miss Mary Cahill. A bevy of fair damsels also assisted a-nd were flitting about the hall raffling various articles and raking in the shekels. The refrey^hment stall was managed by Mesriames Chas. Mitchell, Jas. Richards, and Miss Shinvbles. Some very bsautiful pi/atures were ex'hfbited, the oine atitractitng most atteinitioti being a beautiful copy of Carlo Dolci's Matdonma anfd Child. The sium ■of £17.1 was t«akon during the two days, wfoitfh will enable the balance of the £700 the cjamven't cost to he paid off, an.d leave a STim as a nucleus of a fund towards erecting a hamdsome stpne oliurdh in the near future. The ammial distribution of prizes to the ptipils of St. Josephs School, Port Chalmers, took place recently, Rw Pat<her HoWard presMing. There Was pjesdnt a large number of tjhe parents of the children. Mr. Allen, M.H.R., presented the prizes to the boys, the Mayor to the girls, aald the Miayoross decorated the winners of medals. After a short jprogranune ha!d beein gome I}hrougih, Rev. Father Howard thanked the MayoT and Mr. Allen for tihis, their flhird, visit to the school, congratulated the Sisters ai^d pu-pils on the success of the last examinatiian, at>d cartduded "by wishing all a happy Christmas and vary pleasant holidays. Mr. Allen also spoke very eneoiHTagingly to the children, exhorted them to follow t-he advice their devoted p,ai=it<oT had gijven them, ati|d Uo rem^m'ber 'kindly wherever they wemt the Sisters, w!ho were iwaki'ng so many sacrifices for them. Mr. De Maus, whose* geirial manner always brings a smile to the faces of Mhe youna; people, said he was delighted to haar s;o goad a^ accow'nt of t)he children, and called for tihree cheers for tlhe Sisters and Rev. Father Howard, wihich were heartily given. A similar compliment to tine Mayoress, Itfie Mayor, and Mr. Allen brought the proceedings to a close.
