A Parting Request
When olne enters an his 75th year, his closing days cannjot Ne far distant. I have on that account a parting request to make. When tihe great patr-dn of Gaul, St. Martin of Tours, was about to pass to his rewand, surrounded by his disciples, he offered up the prayer • ' Domime si adhuc pop)uli two sum necessarius nan recuso laborem.' I would not presume to ask you to join with me in smrti a prayer, for no one realises better Jhan myself, that when I shall have passed away the work of religion will be carried on .with far greater success flbJan hitfherto, and with greater glory to the Most High. But I will rattier ask you to ofier for me a fervent prayer to the effect that so lang as life remaims I may be a faithful follower of the Di(vine Master, assjoc'if&teld witlh ycu in loviing Him and serivin°- Him a,nd that being truly devout to our Immaculate LiaJdy I may have the fer,vent aspiration of St. Aug.ustine that has long been dear to me, elver present to my ininSd and e,ver resoiiWdlng in my heart . 'Da quod ju>bes, Domi'ne et jube qmod vis.' '
