a successiul euchre party, maid of the home for the aged poor to be opened at Andeison's Bay next month was held m St. Joseph's Hall on Wednesday evening of last week. ° On All Souls' Day a Solemn Requiem Mass for the faithful departed was celebrated in St. Joseph's Cathedral by his Lordship the Bishop, -Rev. Father Murphy Adm , being deacon, and Rev. Father O'Malley subdeacon. ' ' The Rev. Father Brown, S.J., and Rev. Father Roney, S.J., aie conducting a mission dunng vhe piesent week m Palmerston. Rev. Father Clahey, S.J. opened a mission m Port Chalmers on Sujiday, and a mission will be opened in TvJosgiel next Sunday by Rev. Fathc Bioun There was Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at St. Joseph's Cathedral on Sunday from the 11 o'clock Mass until Vespeis. In the evening there was the usual procession, m winch the children of the parish schools and the membeis tv )f the Sacred Heart Society took part In the course of an article, entitled ' The Press of Otago ' which appeared in the ' Kvenmg Star' of the Ist in^l . the wilier has the following to say of the 1 New Zealand Tablet ' — ' Re-presenting the (. atholic faith, the ' I inlet ' was set on a rock on 3rd May, U'.73, by Bishop Moran Ot commanding ability, secured on uncompromising lines, marshalled by a phalanx of literal y atliletes, supported by a crowd of devoted adherents, and wilh a singleness of aim, it is a power which must be reckoned with — respected ' 'lhe membeis ot S1 Mary's Literary and Social Club (Milton) brought a very successful session to a pleasant close by a social gathering; held in St. Mary's Schoolloorn. The \ erv Rev. Father O'Neill presided alnd there was a large attendance. After an enjoyable hour at cards and games, a short programme was rendered, consisting of songs by Misses Richmond and Leaven, and Messrs. T. Leaven, J. Hand, and P. Hynes ; recitation 'by -Miss Richmond ; reading by Mr,. J. A. Scott ; and step dances by Messis. P. Ilyncs and W. Kirby. All the peilormers acquitted themselves with credit, Miss Richmond's line ringing and reciting being specially appreciaiod. At the close of the programme ample justice was done to the refreshments, kindly and liberally supplied by the lady members of the Club. Among the successful competitors in the recent Duncdm competitions were the following pupils of "the Dominican Nuns :— Miss Hannah Sweeney (winner of lirst pri^e in the mez/o soprano sole; third pri7e, ' SwilIpvvs ' ; third prize, Morag's ' Faiiy glen '), Miss Violet Fra/cr (winner of the first prize, ' The trout ' ; /second prize, ' The swallows ' ; third prize, ' Down the vale '), Miss Amelia Maior (winner oE second prize, accompanied song, ' Angles guard thee), Miss Kathleen Collins, (winner' of second prize in recitation, ' Killed at the Ford '), and Misses Myra Montague and Minnie Paton (winners of first pn/.e.in pianoforte duet, ' Tarantelle ').
