DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

On Tuesday, the Feast of All Saints, Masses were cejebrated at 7, 8, and 9 o'clock in St. Joseph's Cathedral. In announcing at St. Joseph's Cathedral on Sunday morning that a home lor the aged poor would be opened by the Little Sisters of the Poor on December 8, his Lordship the Buvhop expressed the hope that members of the congregation would assist in the furnishing ot it All who have followed the unqualified successes which have attended the ehorts of the Christian Brothers and their pupils at the Dunedin Elocutionary Competitions, since their inauguration three years ago, must feel very gratified with the results obtained during the present Competition. Ot the three sections open to boys, the pupils tiom this school have carried oil two lirsts and two seconds. This is most creditable when we consider that only three candidates are placed in each section. In the recitation for boys under 14, I The fall of D'Assas,' the judge gave well-merited praise to the winners of hrst and second places, viz., Master T. Ley burn (,Ist) and w. Mulrooney (2nd). Both winners are pupils ot the Christian Brothers' School. In the more dillieult piece, ' Cardinal Wolsey's Soliloquy,' open to boys and girls under 16, Master Thomas Laftey took first pri/.e, he being, in the estimation of (.he judge, the one who got nearest to the spirit ot the grand soliloquy. Piaster P. Wilson obtained second place in the piece, ' Sheridan's Ride,' for boys under 21. Results like these plainly show that successes on the athletic field are not tn« only ones to vie credit ot the pupils of the Christian Brothers. At the ordinary meeting of the Dunedin brancn of the II A.C.B. Society, held on October 25, the balance sheet tor the past quarter was lead and adopted. Sincere reg'et was expressed at so many deaths during the quarter, 'lhe auditors reported having examined the books, etc., and, finding everything correct and up-to-date ausual, complimented the secretary on the satisfactory vstate of his accounts. The secretary reported, according to instructions received at a previous meeting, that the amount of capital paid by present members to the Dunedin I nited Friendly Societies' Dispensary was £8 Is.
