(From our own correspondent.) October 27. Rev Father McCiuiness is, I regret to say, in indifferent heal tii. Altei Benediction at St. Patrick's last Sunday evening the Dead Maich lrom ' Saul ' was played in memory of the late Rev Brother Maik. The principal topic of conversation here last week was the ' Order of the Good Shepherd,' a community of women established under the control of the Bishop of Auckland. Its constitution is a vow of celibacy, v -elding obedience to the Bishop, who alone lia.s power to lelease the membe s from their vows. The Order was dc cely assailed by a motion of censure proposed b\ a layman and supported by Canon Beatty at the meeliivj, ot the Anglican Synod. Last Thursuay evening the Manst Bi others' Old Bojs' Association held a most successful euchre party, the proceeds ot which are to be handed to the Manst iiiotheis Fully 100 pla.veis took pa-t, and two hours vvcie devoted to play and the remainder to music, social intercom. On playing o:l the Misses Mynn secuicd both first and second, which compnsed a very handsome gold medallion and a silver pin-bo\. The ladies' prives were donated uv the Klcctru Tiamway (lonipany,( l onipany, and Mr Walsh gave one ol the- gentlemen's pn/es The following ladies successtuilv can led out the arrangements / Mesdames \lahoney and Dunn, Misses Donovan, Reidv, urace, Uahone'v , Bivanl, Koeiord, Mcilhone, and Knight. At Si Benedict's Hall last evening a very line conceit was given in aid ot the organ fund for St. Benedict's ( In rch The attendance was excellent Miss Wary Cooper sang nicely ' Waitinii ' and 'It was a, dream ' ftl'ss M. Somerville contributed ' Maori canoe soiio- ' and ' Sleep ' ' Let me like a soldier fall ' ami •'i here is a flower that bloometh ' were capitally rendeied by Mr Waltei Whyte, who, with Mr. E i< arley, took part in the duet, ' The moon hath raised ' Mr. Farley gave ' 'I he tempest of the heart ' and ' Qui viye.' Mr J P Whelan was successful In his bass solos. Two violin 'solos weie given by Mr. Herbert Bloy. 'The happy Jan ' and ' Alhambra Club march ' ve-e contributed on 'the banio by Mr. C'has Macfarlane. Two manoiorte solos l Alice ' and ' Minuet celebre,' were capitally Plavcd by Mr. TT A Lamb and an item by the pupils ot Misses Knight was heartily applauded. The accompaniments were played by Mr« S. Jackson, Miss \ M Sayers, Messrs. 0. X Shorland, and IT. A. Lamb. The entertainment was in every way a success.
