DIOCESE OF CHRISTCHURCH
(From our own correspondent.) August 10. The religious of Our Lady of the Missions have sus» tamed another loss by the death of Sister Mary St. Brendan, which occurred at the Monastery of the Sacred Heart, Barbadoes street, last week. The deceased Sister was interred in the Linwood Cemetery.— R.l. P. St. Mary's Cricket Club intend holding their annual meeting on Friday, the 14th inst, when an opportunity will be given to intending members to join. The Club having won the matting competition, decided to have the members' cricket improved, and with this object have de* termined to play during the coming season on turf at Lancaster Park. With the promises of support the Club anticipate considerable success during the summer months. The clergy of the Pro-Cathedral have of late more than a fair share of experience of fires. On last Thursday evening the stable in the vicinity of the episcopal residence was destroyed, the fire evidently originating accidently. By the exertions of the household, his Lordship the Bishop's carriage, harness, and several horses were got out safely, but the building was so far damaged that it will require to be reinstated, a work to be immediately undertaken. In connection with the above occurrence and a pre« vious one, Mr. Smith, Fire Brigade Superintendent, has received a cheque for £5 5s in aid of the funds of the brigade, from the Very Rev. Father Le Menant des Che(s« nais, V.G. In forwarding the cheque, the Rev. Fathet states :— ' The zeal, promptitude, and cleverness with which on two occasions your brave men put out the firt which had accidentally broken out in our premises are beyond every praise. I beg of you to accept the enclosed cheque, my only regret being that I cannot make it a hundred times greater.' The annual appeal for funds in aid of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was made in the Pro-Cathedral at all the Masses and at Vespers on Sunday last. The Rev. Father O'Connell preached a charity sermon at High Mass, whilst at Vespers the Very Rev. Vicar-Gene-ral delivered an eloquent discourse suitable to the subiect under notice. The result of the collections exceeded considerably any previous ones. The Society's annual report and balance sheet (as appearing in the present issue of this paper) were distributed at the church doors. During Benediction at the Pro-Cathedral on Sunday evening the ' Te Deum ' was sung in thanksgiving for the election of the new Pontiff, Pope Pius X. His Lordship Die Bishop has prescribed the prayer, ' Pro Papa, to be said during Mass until the coronation in place of the prayer previously prescribed during the interval before the election.
