VERY REV. DEAN HOLLAND, REEFTON.
On Tuesday the had, but not wholly unexpected news was received by us that the Very Rev. Dean Rolland, Reefton, had passed away. The venerable Dean had been seriously ill for some months, and for some weeks his medical adviser held out no hopes of his recovery. '1 he deceased, who was a native of France, came to New Zealand about 38 years ago, being then in his 1 30 th > ear His first mission was in Havvke's Bay and Taranaki In 1865 he was appointed chaplain to the forces opei at ing under General Chute against the Maoris, and was present at a number of engagements, when his coolness, bravery, and devotion to duty gained for him the ungiudging praise ol the military authorities. He played a prominent part during the retreat from Ngatuotemanu, when* Von Tempskoy fell. His career is reviewed in dudgeon's ' Heroes of New Zealand.' — IOI.P.
