June 24th. After last Mass on Sunday a general meeting of the parishioners was held. Rev. Father Gogsran, S M., presided. The rev. chairman laid before the congregation thd requirements of the Spit end of the parish, and also the necessity of painting St. Patrick's Church. He stated that a site had been purchased for a church at the Spit. The cost ot the land was £12.5, and in less than a week the parishioners collected that sum, and had £50 besides towards the church fund. The statement was greeted with applause, and the whole congregation unanimously ngrt&i to try and have both works completed before the return of their beloved paHtor, Dean Grosran. This they think will be the most fitting testimonial that they could present him with. A strong and energetic committee was formed Collectors are to be appointed, and everything auguri towards a near commencement of the works The ladies of the pariah gave an agreeable surprise to the Rev. W. D. Go^Kuti, S.M., on the eve of the feat>t of his patron, St". William. They invit d him to au 'at home.' After the assembly had punnken of the m.my good toings Mrs. E. Brophy, president of the St. Vmceut de Paul booiety, wisned the rev. gentleman a happy Itabt and Paid many kind things of his priestly zeal whilst amongst them. Mibh Flunnery then mode a presentation of a haudtouie rug. The Rev. Father suitably and feelingly replied.
«" ■ ■ — • The Catholic Young Men's Association is making itß power felt It gave a conversazione in the Gaiety Theatre on last Monday The subjoined report of the proceedings from the Haioke's Bay Herald will show how it was appreciated :— There was a very large attendance, and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Entertainment of a ~*ried character was provided, ping pong and other parlor games VPomg interspersed with dancing. Miss Renn supplied the music for the dance*, extra dances being played by Misses Buchanan, Barry, Shanahan, Wells, and Mr C. Eagar. A good musical programme was presented. Misses King and Benson, and Mr. Flanagan contributed v^cal solos. Mnses King and SUunton dang the duct What are the wild waves saying,' and Messrs. Mullaney and Young danced an Irish jig and hornpipe reHpoctivtly Tho accompaniments were played by Misses Henn and Murnane Refreshments were distributed during the evening. To the committee of the association, the president (the Rev. Father Goggan) and the acting-secretary (Mr. M. F. O'Rourke) credit is due for their efforts in providing such an enjoyable evening's entertainment. It is gratifying to learn that the association is rapidly increasing in membership, and is becoming a progressive and flourishing institution.
