St. Anselm was a native of Aosta, in Piedmont At the age of 27 he became a member of the Benedictine Ordtr at the Abbey of Bee, in Normandy. In 10IU hv was consecrated Archbishop ot Canterbury, a dignity which he held fur 1(5 years. A considerable portion of this time was spent by St. An-elm m exile, in contequence of hi« refusal t> submit to the into arable pretensions of the English Kings, William Rufus and Henry I.
