Among the successful candidates at the recent Junior Civil Service examination was Miss Maud Casey, a pupil of the Convent of Mercy, Greymouth. In sentencing a gaol-breaking prifoner at Few Plymouth to three months' imprisonment (to be concurrent with the sentence he was already serving), Mr Justice Connolly paid he did not look on the offence of escaping fiom gaol as a serious one, because it was only natural (or a wan to escape if he had the chance. The Government has decidtd to send a tenth contingent to South Africa, which is to leave in three weeks. The majority of members of the Legislature approve of the decifaion of the Government, but a minority think it would be well to wait and see if there is any necessity for sending more men.
