ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGTON.
(Prom our own correspondent.) March 13. The net proceeds of the carnival held at Masterton amount to £500. Rev. Father Hearn, of Narrabri, N.S.W., passed through Wellington on his way South last Tuesday. Mr T. Turnbull, architect, of Wellington, has generously donated to St. Patrick s Church, Maaterton, a handsome high altar, which has now been placed in position. The Hibernian Society holds a picnio at Very Rev. Father Lane's grounds on St. Patrick's Day, and in the evening a national concert will be held at the Skating Rink. The refreshment stallholders at the coming bazaar have had printed a cookery book containing numerous tried recipes which should prove of great assistance to housekeepers. The book is already having a ready sale. At the Church of the Sacred Heart on Tuesday last Miss Essie Sheridan, second daughter of Mr P. Sheridan, of the Native Lands
office, was married to Mr TTarcus Piimmer, formerly a member of the N.Z. Times staff. Rev. Father Holley performed the ceremony. Mr and Mrs PJiinmer left for Grisborne in the afternoon, where it is their intention to reside. Mr. J. J. Devine received a cable yesterday afternoon from Maritzburg stating that his son Private Albert Devine died from enteric fever. The deceased was a member of the seventh contingent and was for some years a pupil of St. Patrick's College. — lUP. Last Sunday afternoon the inmates of the Home for Incurabtes were treated to some delightful music kindly provided by the members of Minifies orchestra, and several gentlemen who rendered vocal items. Many friendH of the Sisters were also present. The inmates thoroughly appreciated the programme. The Sisters return thanks to these performers for their thoughtfulness in affording an afternoon's pleasure to those under their charge. The Sisters of Compassion have now under their supervision 10 wards accommodating at the present time 24 patients. A large balcony, enclosed with glass at both ends, runs the whole length of the recently-acquired buildings, and is used by the men as a smoking room. A delightful outlook adds to the pleasant surroundings. The women have a large recreation room overlooking the Basin Reserve. Mr. FT. Redmond has been promoted from the Tax to the Defence Department, and will now hold the rank of SergeantMajor and drill instructor to the Wellington district. Mr. Redmond held, since the formation of the corps, the position of colorsergeant in the Civil Service Rifles Corps, and acted «b drill instructor to the eighth contingent at Trentham and to the ninth contingent at Auckland.
