DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN.
A list of subscriptions to the baildinar fund of the new Con vent of Mercy, South Dunedia, appears in this issue. The Sisters of Mercy desire to return their sincere thanks to all who have so generously contributed to the fund. We regret to hear of the death of Mrs O'Hagtm, wife of Mr Charles O'Hagan, Pukerau, who died suddenly on Tuesday. Mrs O'Hagan had been a resident for many years in the district, and was very highly reepected. The greatest pympathy is felt by a large circle of friends for Mr O'Hagan and family in their sad bexeavement. — R.I.P. His Lordship Bishop Verdon made a visitation of the following districts recently and administered the Sacrament of Confirmation : On January 30, his Lordship confirmed 40 candidates at Wintou ; February 5, 30 at Riverton ; February 6, 18 at Orepuki ; February 9, 89 at Wrey's Bush. Rev. Father Headen, of Holy Cross College, underwent a surgical operation on Tuesday for the purpose of removing an internal growth. His many friends amorjg the clergy and laity in this Colony will be pleased to hear that the operation was highly successful His Grace Archbishop Redwood, accompanied by the Right Rev. Dr. Grimes and the Right Rev. Dr. Lenihan, arrived in Dunedin by Friday's express. During the stay of the distinguished visitors in this city they were the guests of the Right Rev. Dr Verdon. On Saturday morning the visiting prelates, accompanied by his Lordship Bishop Verdon and the Rev. Father Cleary, paid a visit to the Tablet office, and were shown over the premises. They were greatly pleased with all they saw, and were deeply interested in the new type-setting machine, which is a marvel of mechanical ingenuity. On Sunday the visiting prelates assisted at the ceremonies of the opening of the new Convent of Mercy, South Dunedin, the occasional sermon being preached by Archbishop Redwood, a report of which appears in another part of this issue, whilst Bishop Lenihan was celebrant of the Pontifical High Mass. Bishop Lenihan left for the North on Monday morniDg, and Bishop Grimes on Tuesday, both prelates having been seen off by his Grace the Archbishop of Wellington, his Lordship Bishop Verdon, and the local clergy. Archbishop Redwood attended the meeting of the Senate of the New Zealand University, which took place on Wednesday at the Otago University College.
