PALMERSTON NORTH.

A very successful bazaar was held recently in Pnlmerston North, the object being to liquidate a debt cf JioOO on the Convent of Mercy. The bazaar was opened by Mr. F. Pirani, M.H.R, who Baid that its object was to pay off a debt on what was practically the home of the Sisters of Mercy — to relieve from an incubus the place where a number of self-denying women livtd, who devoted themselves to tho«e objects which m >st appealed to our hearts and our sympathies — viz., the training and education of young folk and the visiting of the sick and the distressed, bringing comfort and consolation into homes where it was often padly needed. lie complimented tho^e who had worked so earnestly for the success of the bazaar upon the results shown — upon petting together the mest artistic ami capital display he had seen at a bazaar in Palmerston — and he felt Mire that if the patron-age was commensurate with the merit" of the ha/, lar the receipts should be very good indeed. The bazaar lasted days, and the businet-s done was more than f-atisfactory, the total amount taken being over £~>~i\ and for this result great praise is due to the stallholders, the committee, and all others who had a-<-ivted , and in an especial manner to the Rev. Father Tymous, for his successful endeavois to wipe off the longstanding debt. The organising of the details fell to the lot of Mr. W. Ryan, who displayed considerable tact, business capacity, and energy in carrying out the work, and to him a large amount of credit for the finan ial results is due. [Further particulars which, we learn by wire, were forwarded in connection with the bazaar were not to hand when this portion of our issue went to press. The total receipts amounted to about £600.1
