(From an occasional correspondent.) January 17. Death has been bu=y in our midst since tha commencement of the New Year, no less than three old and well-known residents of the district having been called to their lapt account. Mrs Bergin, of Kanieri, and Mr James AlcXulty, of Hokitika, bnth died in the Hokitiku hospital about the beginning of the New Year ; whilst on Saturday, the ISth. Mr Patrick Carroll, an old and highly esteemed resident of the Stafford and Waimea districts, and also well known in Hokitika, fell a victim to the prevailing epidemic. — influenza. A Requiem, Mass is to be celebrated ou Friday (19th) for the repose of the souls of the Catholics who feil in the Transvaal war. On Sunday (Hth) the Rev. Dr. Kennedy, of Meanee, who is at present in Hoki'.ika cmliictinar a retreat for tie nuiiS, rjreached an able discc ursc on the Blessed Eucharist in St. Mary's Ohuroh. Whilst loaiin* sleepers on a truck last Thursday Mr P. Haines had the misfortune to break his leg.
