GISBORNE CONVENT SCHOOL.

The annual concert and distribution of prizes to the pupils of the Convent School, Gisborne, took place last week in the Academy of Music, in the presenoe of a large audience. The following (reports a local paper) contributed to a capital programms :—: — Chorus, pupils ; pianoforte duet, Misses Devery and Liddell,; violin bolo, Misses Devery and Donovan ; chorus, infants ; dumb* bell exercises, junior pupils ; violin solo, Miss Devery ; recitation, Misa Mabel Clarke ; chorus, pupils ; pianoforte solo, Miss Adeline Coote : chorus, infants ; violin solo, Misa Dora Booth ; vocal solo, Miss Mabel Clarke ; club exercises, pupils ; pianoforte duet, Misses Nicholson and McConville; recitation, Mies Lullie Power; violin solo, Mist Devery ; chorus, pupils ; pianoforte trio, Misses Coote, Hale, and Clarke ; tambourine drill and dance, pupils ; chorus, pupils ; pianoforte piece, Miss Adeline Coote; vocal solo, Mi*s Linda Nioholson ; pianoforte duet, Miss Ethel Downes and A. Downes ; shepherds' drill and dance, pupils ; vocal solo, Willie MoConville ; pianoforte solo, Miss Mabel Clarke ; vocal duet, Misses Coote and Nioholson ; violin solo, Miss Lullie Power ; pianoforte solo, Misa Irene Harding ; chorus, pupils. The several dances given by the children were very pretty and elioited loud applause from the audience. The tambourine drill and dance were specially worthy of mention, as were also the club and dumb-bell exercises. At an interval during the evening the Hon. James Carroll distributed the prizes, and before doing so gave the children a short address as well as a recitation. Mr. Carroll was quite in his element with the children, and his remarks to each of the successful candidates as he or she came forward to receive the prize were of a most happj nature. The Rev. Father Mulvihill and Mr. J. Martin assisted in the distribution of the prizes. The following is the

The Inspector, Mr. Hill, examined the school on October 21, and reported as follows :— Standard Vl.— Presented 3, present 3, passed 2. Standard V. — Presented 3, present 3, passed 3. Standard IV. — Presented 8, present 8, passed 7. Standard 111. — Presented 14, present 14, passed 12. Standard II. — Presented 8, present 8, passed 7. Standard I.— Presented 3, present 3, passed 2. Class P.— Presented 42. Grammar very fair ; geography of Standard 11. very good ; mental arithmetic very good ; repetition good ; recitation very good ; drill and exercises fair ; calisthenics fair ; singing intelligently and well-taught ; needlework very good ; comprehension of the language of reading lesson fair. The Standards are good, well-prepared, and of commendable promise. The style of work is very good. The preparatory classes under the pupil teacher are in good working order. They show an interest in their work. I was pleased with the intelligence of the answering in the oral exercises set by me. Remarks : The average progress made by "his school since my examination last year is good. The pass and extra subjects have been very fairly prepared, and the work is iv advance in general proficiency to that submitted last year. There is a nice spirit of emulation among the pupils, and the style of the work on paper and in books affords evidence of good training and supervision.
