FROM THE " SUPPLEMENTARY NEWS. j Printßd by Fercusson and Mitchell Duiitig the Fete in aid of the Bsnevolent Asylum, on the Premises o Messrs. Guthrie and Larnach, May 24, 1576. (~yjß LOCAL INDUSTRIES. MESSRS. HALLENSTEIN BROS., Of the New Zealand Clothing Factory, followin; the example of some of the large manufacturers at Home, and more especially with a •view of preventing the importation of English, clothing, intend opening an extensive Retail Establishment for the sale of their manufactures. For this purpose, they havr fitted up commodious premises at the corner of tlie Octagon "and Princes st reet, which are to be opened oil Satnrday, May 27. This branch nill be under the immediate management of Mr. Laurensou, and under the supervision of Mr. B. Hallenatein. the head of the New Zealand firm. Messis H.ille^stem Bros., under the management of Mr Anderson, a partner in the wholesale and factory branch, .vtaited the New Zealand Clothing Factory about two and a-ha'f years ago. They commenced on a comparatively small scale ; at present, they employ between 200 and 300 hands. They have had to overcome many difficulties and much prejudice, but now their goods, as will be seeufiom the ships' n'anifests, .ire being sent to all parts of New Zealand. In Duniiiliu only they have found peisistent opposition on the part of the laiger houses who aie glutting this market with impoited goods, and, no doubt, the retaileis find it to their advantage to push these in prefeience to loo.il rmumfiiutures. Tlie pioprietora of the New Zealand Clothing Facfcoiy have, theiefore. very judiciously decided to iutieduce their niauuf.ictuies uirect to the large consuming population of Duiiedin ; and, in oirler to do so effectively, they have determined to sell a single garment at tlie wholesale price. The selling piice is to be marked in plian figures on every article, from -n Inch no abatement will Ijo made. The business is to be conducted strictly on the cash puucipld, and all goods must be paid for on delivery, but any article not found suitable may be exchanged, or the mouej leturned As will be see. i irom Uie garments presented by the Now Zealand Clothing Factory in aid of the Benevolent Asylum, and now exhibited in this buildinc;, they aie supeuor in style and quality, and at a proportionately lower pii c, than anything that can be imported. But, in cspettive of all these advantages, it is to the interest of eveiyone to support an industry which employs local labour, and is a direct benefit to the butcher, baker, farmer, niechanio, shopkeeper, merchant, and to all sections of the community.
