Henry Driver, on behalf of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, reports as follows for the week ending October 4, 1876 :— Wool. — By private telegram, dated London, 10th September, Liverpool sales went off at better prices, thus giving a more assured character to the recovered tone of the close of the last. London sales. | This information is very important to wool-growers— apparently of too much importance to be noticed by the public telegrams. , Sheepskiii3. — At our Fales this afternoon, biddings were brisk, full j prices being obtained. Green cross-bred?, Ea 5i to 5s ; merinos, 3S3 S 8d to 3s lid ; dry cross-breds, 2s £d to 4s 3d ; merir.os, 2s 4d to 3s 4d. j Hides. — Small supply, no alteiation i". prices. Wet-salted sold at 3^d ; green, 16s to lSs % 9d. Tallow. — None offered. ' Grain. — Wheat is very firm, and scarce at 5s to 6s. Oats have come forward mere fieely, but readily picked up at 2s 2d to 2s 3d for good to heavy feed. Barley, prime malting, sells at 4s Gd, whilst ordinary descriptions, which were selling at 4s, are quite neglected. Good milling is saleable ot 2s 9J. Mr. Skenb reports for the week ending October 4, as follows :—: — The demand for working Jpeople has very much improved, principally ; for country ; but even town enquirj, for skilled labor and tradesmen, i has at last begun. Far too many of our late arrivals are only suited i for shop and office. It cannot be too clearly shown that it is folly so ' many should conoe to Otugo. Female servants were never scarcer. ' Couples are not wanted much yet. Station people are now in season. The building and timber trades is slowly improving. Wages — Coupler, £65, £70, £75, and £80 j shepherds, £60 and £65 ; day labor— bush, road, and rail, 7s, Bs, and 9s ; boys, 6s to 10s ; dairy people, 15s to 25s ; , female servants vary from 10s, 12s, 15s, 20s, and 30s per week ; clerks 1 and shopmen, 30s to 60s per week ; carpenters, 10s to 13s per day. 1 Mr. A. Mercer reports as follows for the week ending October 4, 1876, retail prices only :— Fresh butter, in prints, Is6d to Isßd ; fresh butter, in lump?, Is 4d ; powdered and suit butter Is 6J. The supply ' of fresh butter is getting very plentiful, and some of the grocers are ' salting down, and prices must fall. New season salt butter, Is 4d, in keg. Cheese, of the beat quality, Is 2d ; side and rolled bacon, lid to Is ; Colonial hams, Is 2d to Is 3d ; English hams, Is 6d to Is 7c' s ! Eggs are still in good demand at Is 3d i Messrs. M. and J. Meenan, George Street, report the fol'owin; I as the ktist quotations : — Flour— Large bags, £13 ; small do, £13 10s lerior. Oatmeal — £11 10j per ton. Peail barley — £22 per ton.
