Dr CUMMING HOAXED.
A. oobbbspondbnt of the 'Diiity News' reports a hoax played on Dr. Gumming. The doctor was announced to deliver a lecture at Folkestone at three o'clock in the afternoon on " The Fope and his Work in England." As he entered the hall a telegram, juafc arrived from London, was presented to him. He at onca proceeded to- the platform, opened the telegram, t»nd read it aloud. As fat as the wordt could be caught, they were — "Private telegram from- Rome. The Pop© died at ten o'clock this morning." The effect cannot be doscribed. Those present were confounded. The lecture wa9 softened down into a mild and not \erj forcible reference to the solemn event which had been announced. The evening papora ware jought^wi^l* avidity at all the libraries, and the whole population, iacl'udjag » largo number of poor Irish, were greatly excited, ■ ,-. . T
