MORNING SERIALS
Sir-In The Listener of October 16, Evelyn Salisbury suggests that "it would be interesting to know how many women actually listen" to morning serials and adds that in her "circle of average married women" she can "find no one who takes an interest in or follows these prograrnmes." In my suburb, north-east of Christchurch City and near the Mairehau School, a local storekeeper tells me that
his customers converge in a rush each morning after the serial time lull be‘tween 10 and 11 a.m. I have the misfortune to live next door and opposite to houses where successive housewives not only have listened to serials but rebroadcast thern as well. Evelyn Salisbury and her friends and my own circle must belong to a manority with unusual preferences. I. wish she could come to Christchurch and buy the house next door. Then each could enjoy the quiet of her own kitchen and pursue her own thoughts undisturbed. Unfortunately, our letters to-The Listener are unlikely to influence the serial listeners because they are not interested in its articles and other programmes and do not buy it. Their sets are tuned to receive commercial programmes from morning to night except for periods at the weekend when sporting commentaries are transmitted by ‘National _ stations and their husbands and sons take pleasure in rebroadcasting them to the surtounding neighbourhood.
