THE TWO-HEADED SPY

(Columbia) G Cert. HE newspaper advertisement read so like the opening announcement of a Goon Show-"Jack Hawkins as the most famous unknown hero of World War II’-that I would scarcely have been surprised if Mr Hawkins had appeared with two heads, but even without that soupcon of the outré, The Two-Headed Spy would earn an Oscar for altitude in any contest for tall stories. Whatever factual basis this story of a super-spy may have (and the prologue hints that such basis exists) only the most nominal intelligence could muster credulity enough to swallow the soupedup screen version. It presents Mr Hawkins as a British intelligence officer embedded in the Wehrmacht, who served in the German Army with distinction in 1914-18 and by 1939 who had become GSO (Supply) on the Polish Front and bosom pal of the Fuhrer. The film begs a thousand questions, but the only one I troubled to ponder was how General Schottland could have served with distinction between 19141918 when-judging by appearanceshe could hardly have been more than 14-18 at the time.
