TYRANNY BY STEALTH

Sir,-Under the heading "Tyranny by Stealth" your correspondent G. A. McCracken writes about subliminal and conventional advertising (N.Z. Listener, November 14). Whilst my Association shares his disquiet about the former, we should like him to consider the beneficial effect other forms of advertising have had on production and commerce. Advertising, by providing both information and buying stimuli; has helped to create demand and has opened up wide markets. Thus it facilitates largescale production and enables the unit cost of goods to be lowered. There are articles your correspondent uses frequently, foodstuffs he eats daily, that would have cost many times their current cost had not advertising made mass production possible. ‘There are doubtless many people in his neighbourhood who find employment and enjoy a high standard of living, again because advertising has been instrumental in the growth of industry. I am glad to see Mr McCracken’s fair reference to the cleverness and brilliance of advertising but submit that "great talents are daily hired for’ ends rather more ace iagth to mankind than he suggests.
