THE BELL MORNING
H OW strange, this morning, to hear the sound of bells; Or think to hear; could bells carry so far? Could bells trip and tumble down this clear air, Bell-like itself, so that there should be no falseness In hearing, or thinking to hear, bells ringing? If there were no bells ringing in the city How did the mind make bell tongues tangle in song Across the beaten bell-sounding distance of the blue bay? How clear, this morning, the thought of lost bells Under the calm echoing water; and mind a bell too, Where, whether the real bells spoke, or time grew Tired of a landscape without bells, my swift year tolls. And the bell morning breaks into bright brass-flake Flames. and all are tongued like bells. and shake, and shake.
