[-ORTY years ago Australian and New Zealand forces won several notable victories which led up to the success of the Canadians at Passchendaele. The climax of their effort was the Battle of Broodseinde of October 4, 1917, in which very heavy casualties were inflicted on the German forces. The New Zealand Division alone took 1159 prisoners, as. well as 60 machine-guns and war material which included valuable maps and documents. New Zealand casualties also were heavy. To mark the anniversary of this battle, the BBC is producing a 15-minute programme which will be heard from YA and YZ stations on Friday, October 4, and is also likely to be broadcast in Ex-Ser-vicemen’s Sessions. It is expected to include a recording of The Last Postwhich has been sounded every night for 30 years, even during the German occupation-at Menin Gate, and_ inter- _ views with members of the Imperial War Graves Commission, with local residents and with Australian and New Zealand ex-servicemen.
