GENTLEMEN MARRY BRUNETTES
(United Artists-RKuss-Field) Y Cert. ALWAYS ready to enjoy a musical, I like to think my standards are not impossibly high. To come down to cases: I’ve been pleasantly entertained by quite a few well below the level of On the Town. But even good. average musicals are rather rare, and Gentlemen Marry Brunettes isn’t one of them. Based on a novel by Anita Loos, it’s the story of two American showgirls (Jane Russell and Jeanne Crain) who go to Paris and find themselves following in the footsteps of their mother and her sister (Jane Russell and Jeanne Crain), showgirls of the 1920s, even to the extent of méeting two of their admirers (Rudy Vallee and Guy Middleton) who still have an eye for a pretty girl. Of course, there are a couple of young fellows as well. There are one or two amusing moments in the flashbacks, but for the most part this is a damp, unstylish, rather heavy-handed affair. Even the dances (choreographer, Jack Cole) aren’t' anything special; and technically the film falls short. Richard Sale directed.
