Broadway Invaded
ROADWAY, the centre of American show business, is not traditionally kind to visitors..So although British companies have long been taking British plays to new audiences there, it is perhaps rather more surprising when British stars invade the American musical comedies in their own home town. Yet this is happening, the most notable recent example being My Fair Lady, the American musicel adaptation of Shaw’s 1
Pygmalion, with three British stars: Julie Andrews, Rex Harrison, and Stanley Holloway. In Britons on Broadway, to be heard in ZB Sunday Showcase on September 15, Peter Harcourt looks at the British stars who have made a successful Atlantic crossing, and plays some of their recordings. Julie Andrews, Cyril Ritchard and Stanley Holloway have appeared successfully in Broadway musical comedy, while Beatrice Lillie, Joyce Grenfell, and Hermione Gingold are some of the most famous artists in the field of intimate revue.
