Canada's 90th Birthday

N honour of Canada’s 90th birthday on July 1, the CBC International Service prepared a transcribed programme of music from the country’s oldest settled areas, and this is to be heard in the Main National Programme at 3.15 p.m. on June 30. The first half of the programme is based on popular French songs of Quebec, presented by "Les Disciples de Massenet" (right), a Montreal choral group uncer the direction of Charles Goulet. The following

songs are sung by Les Disciples: "Je le méne bien mon dévidoi’," "T’alouette chanta le jour," "Et moi je m’enfouyais," "La-bas sur ces montagnes," and "Mon merle a perdu son bec." The second half of the programme is dedicated to English Canadian songs that come from the Maritime provinces -New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. The first is entitled "Peter Emberley," a well-known New Brunswick song harmonised and orchestrated = by Kelsey Jones, Professor of Music at the McGill Conservatorium of Music in Montreal.
