LIBERTY OR LICENCE?

(CHRISTCHURCH discussion panels have made a_ special contribution to Question Mark in the last few years with an annual series of four discussions on different aspects of one topic. Last year they had a go at pressure groups and the year before they tackled the family. This year their subject is "Liberty or Licence?" The first of the new series of discussions will be heard from YA stations at 8.30 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, when Bernard Smyth, North Canterbury tutor for the Adult Education Department, Canterbury University College (who will chair all the discussions) will meet Ruth Burns, Helen Holmes, J. A. White and L. A. Heyward to discuss "Liberty or Licence? -At Home and at School." On June 13. Mr Smyth’s panel will be Phyllis Hollow, E. B. E. Taylor, T. H. McCombs and H. E. Cohen, who will look at the problem as they see it in New Zealand today. "Liberty, Discipline and Responsibility," will be the topic on June 20, when members of the’ panel will be Eileen Saunders, Mary McLean, H. G. Kilpatrick and Major C. W. Mack, Finally, on June 27, one speaker from each of the first three panels will join P. Martin Smith, National Secretary of Adult Education, to re-examine the main theme of the series in the light of the earlier broadcasts. Like other Question Mark discussions, this series is aimed at the ordin-

ary intelligent listener all over New Zealand, but, they will again have a special audience in small listening groups formed in Canterbury with ‘the help of the Adult Education Department. These groups begin their discussions around the microphone and continue’ them in homes _ throughout the province. Supplementary written material for each broadcast is supplied to all groups which register with the Adult Education Department, and a summary of group opinion on the preceding discussion, broadcast before the second, third and fourth discussions, will be popular with groups, who like to compare their opinions with those of others. Last year more than 500 people took an active part in the scheme, and an even greater enrolment is expected this year.
