On Dog Island

| 4419 lighthouse stands on Dog Island, three miles off the entrance to Bluft Harbour., Jane, of 4YZ, recently visited it to record material for the programme, Life on a Lighthouse Island, which will be heard from the National Women’s Session on Wednesday, May 20. As well as the lighthouse, built in 1865, there are two houses, and grazing land for sheep and cattle on the island. Jane’s visit was brief and rather breathless. "On the day, the sea was distinctly rough," she says, "and when we eventually arrived via pilot launch and dinghy we were advised to get through as rapidly as possible. The weather began to look ominous." In order to return safely Jane had to fit a day’s schedule into 144 hours, hence the breathlessness.
