THREE NEW PLAYS

"THREE new dramatic productions, two from NZBS studios and one from the BBC, are to ibe heard from National Stations during the coming week, Small Hotel, by Rex Frost, is to be heard from the YAs and 4¥Z on Monday, May 13. Roy Leywood has adapted it for radio, and he plays Albert, the head waiter whom the head office of the hotel chain considers is too old for the job. Sinclair Ronald plays the head waitress, who is sent to replace Albert. She ruffles the customers, and Albert does what he can to aggravate her plight. Effie, a young waitress under threat from the law, is played by Dorothy Munro, and Corbet Woodail and Dorothy Campbell play Mr and Mrs Prior, the hotel owners. The Little Farm, a BBC: play from a story by H. E. Bates, will be heard from 1XN on Wednesday, May 15, with The Three Fat Women of Antibes, by Somerset Maugham. This little farm had a neglected air until Tom Richards brought Edna Johnson there as a companion housekeeper. She transformed both the farm and Tom's way of life, until Jack Emmett did something about the changes that threatened his comfortable existence. The other NZBS play, produced in Auckland by Earle Rowell, is Love in Albania, by Eric Linklater. Adapted for broadcasting by Arthur E. Jones, ‘it is to be broadcast in Sunday Showcase from the ZB stations at 9.35 p.m. on May 19. The play is set in war-time London, where a successful writer, Mr Ramillies, meets the father of an American gitl with whom he had an affair in Albania. Mr Ramillies admits to having killed the girl, who was not, it seems, a very pleasant person; and the outcome of his meeting with her father is not as violent as one would expect. Laurence Hepworth plays Mr Ramillies and Barry Linehan the father. Other parts are taken by Elizabeth PenCergrast, Winsome Wallace and Charles Sinclair.
