Big Ear at Eden Park
CONVERTED radar reflector will give greater reality to the commentaries when the Australian cricket team plays Auckland and New Zealand at Eden Park. It has been coupled to a microphone by technicians at- 1YA to pick up sounds from the pitch. Listeners should be able to hear not only the
batsmen striking the ball, but also such sounds as the keeper whipping off the bails, the batsman patting down the turf, the ball hitting. the stumps and the bowler’s acstatic cry "How’s that!" The parabolic reflector, as the device is now called, is not a new idea, but its uses have not even yet been fully explored. It was, for example, used by _ the NZBS at Rotorua during the Royal Tour of 195354. It has also been used by the Netional Film Unit and ior recording bird songs in the bush. Overseas the parabolic reflector is used by the film industry on outdoor locations. In every case the reflector is designed to pick up sounds from a distance, concentrate them and feed them into the microphone. H. R. T. Henderson, senior technician at 1YA, told The Listener that his staff had cut down the radar reflector to half its old size, for the
sake of greater mobility. It was then mounted on a rotating cradle constructed from tubular steel and the front axle assembly of an ancient motor-car. The Australians will play a three-day match against Auckland, starting on March 16, and another against New Zealand, beginning on Friday, March 29.
