Talks for Lent
VERY year, at about this time, some of us find that some of our friends are leaving cups of tea untouched, refusing cigarettes and generally turning away from what we think of as the good things of life: They do so, they will tell you, for the sake of the religious observance of Lent. The 40-day period is, of course, the same as the time Christ spent fasting in the Wilderhess, and since Easter was the only season at which new members of the early Church were baptised, Lent was also a time of preparation. But this only partly explains the self-denial and selfjudgment that goes with the season, for those who seriously observe Lent are really taking stock of themselves spiritually in preparation for their part in the Church’s commemoration of Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection. These and other aspects of the significance of Lent will be discussed in a series of talks to be heard from YA and YZ stations at 9.15 p.m. on Fridays, starting on March 8.
