THE SQUARE JUNGLE
(Universal-International) Y Cert. as Ble a little space to spare this week, I'd like to give belated mention to two films that many will still have a chance to see. The Square Jungle is a competently made and very well played piece about a young fellow (Tony Curtis) who takes up professional boxing to help his no-good father-Jim Backusin a part that will recall his performance in Rebel Without a Cause. (Did you know, by the way, that Jim Backus is |
the voice of Mr. Magoo?) Out of retirement to train the boy comes Bernie Brown (Ernest Borgnine), a man wise to temptation whose advice isn’t always listened to; and Pat Crowley provides some not-too-stereotyped romantic interest. Though the story asks us to swallow a good deal in making its final point, it does show some interest in character, and it illuminates the uneasy life of professional fighters and those about them especially their wives and sweethearts, The ring sequences are well done. Jerry Hopper directed.
