STANDARD PRONUNCIATION
Sir-Can any of your correspondents who have been discussing the pronunciation of English explain the unusual pronunciation of the word "Phoenician," which seems to be peculiar to New Zealand? I find that my children are actually taught at school to say Fo-nee-shn, instead of Fee-nishn. The unfortunate ime pression given by this mispronunciation is that the speaker is confusing Venetians with Phoenicians. I have not vet
heard Fo-nix.
