New Wind Quintet
WELCOME addition to professional chamber ensembles in this country is the New Zealand Wind Ensembles which has been formed by first desk men of the National Orchestra. The group comprises players who have a high reputation as soloists and broad-casters-James Hopkinson (flute), Frank Gurr (clarinet), Norman Booth (oboe), and Peter Glen (horn). Their first broadcast is of Rossini’s Quartet for wind instruments, a brilliant and exuberant work which allows each player flights of virtuosity, Since the time of Haydn the quintet has been a favourite wind combination for composers, as the instruments blend well and can be shown off to their best advantage. There is a wide repertory of works for this medium, and the new group hope to perform most of the standard works from it, as well as modern works, some of which will have a decided jazz idiom. The ensemble has commissioned a work from Douglas Lilburn, and it is hoped that Larry Pruden and other New Zealand composers will also write for them. As well as. performing quintets and quartets the group will be flexible enough to break up into smaller combinations and will combine on occasions with piano and strings, Listeners can look forward to a wide variety of programmes and performances of finesse and verve.
