Mobil Song Quest Finalists
ERE are four of the district winners in the 1956 Mobil Song Quest, who have been selected to represent their areas in the final concert in Wellington on December 3. There will be 12 finalists altogether, and up to six recalls, from whom the winner of the £300 first prize will be chosen. Of these four, Claire Newman, L.R.S.M., L.T.C.L., Wellington district winner (above, right) is a school teacher, with special qualifications for teaching music at South Wellington Intermediate School. Miss Newman has sung in public in Wellington on several occasions, and she has also done some _ broadcasting. Beryl Gough, L.R.S.M., Christchurch district winner (centre), is a teacher of piano
and singing, and was once runner-up for the Melba Scholarship. She has also won the women’s vocal scholarship and the Gunner Memorial in the Christchurch Competitions. Charles Naylor, Wanganui district winner (top, left) is a Presbyterian minister. He has sung the bass roles in Handel’s Messiah and in The Creation, and recently gained several first places in the Wanganui Competitions Festival. Mr. Paul Gillmore, Hamilton district finalist (left), is an Aucklander by birth and has competed successfully in. the Auckland Competitions Festival as well as in Sydney and in Melbourne-where he gained third place in the Sun Aria contest. He lives at Cambridge.
