SOUTHLAND LISTENING

AS last week’s Listener hinted, a rich variety of programmes will be provided for Southland listeners when Invercargill’s new station 4ZA goes on the air next week. ‘Apart from a number’ of features which have proved popular in other centres, several programmes due to start at all Commercial stations will be heard. For the first few weeks ZB Sunday Showcases which have already been broadcast elsewhere will be heard on Sunday nights. Among these are the NZBS production of James Hilton’s Random Harvest, Carousel (music from the CinemaScope film), Comedy Sur-

prise Packet, and a BBC documentary, Journey. by the Niger. Other Sunday programmes will be the popular BBC series London Studio Melodies and The Goon Show, Ininja the Avenger, and Halls of Ivy. On Saturday, 4ZA listeners will hear the Radio Doctor (Dr. H. B. Turbott), sports preview, home gardeners, listeners’ requests and band sessions, Serials to be heard during the week will include three new ones, The Life of, Mary Sothern, Knave of Hearts and The Golden Cobweb. Southerners having their first look at the new 4YZ programme pattern will be pleased to see an exchange of Scottish

programmes between Invercargill and Dunedin-last week’s 4YA’s Calling All Scots on Monday night, and 4YZ’s Caledonian Pipe Band of Invercargill on Wednesday night will be heard from both stations. Southland listeners will hear the pick of YC music, including part of the week’s Mozart Bicentenary Programme. Saturday programmes will include the YA Theatre of Music-next week Boccaccio (see page 17). Jazz fans will have on Monday A Musical History of Jazz. Joining the YA drama link the same night, 4YZ will broadcast an NZBS production of The Holly and the Ivy, and on Sunday night listeners will hear Double Bill, A new talks series to start during the week is Three New Zealand Agitators, and on Saturday 4YZ will broadcast for the first time the popular 4YA family feature Saturday Magazine.
