NZBS GARDEN EXPERTS—6
‘THE dedicated gardener frequently develops a speciality sooner or later, and Cecil Bastion, who conducts The Home Gardener from 2YZ on Thursday evenings, admits he is no exception. Gladioli are his big interest-in a lifetime of gardening he has been growing them for 30 years. He is also keenly interested in roses and in vegetables and, a progressive in the best sense, he likes to try out new introductions in his own garden of just under a quarteracre. Mr. Bastion thinks it’s a good thing for home gardeners to meet others with similar interests for the exchange of views and information, and horticultural and specialist societies get his enthusiastic support. He is a former member of the exectitive of the Napier Horticultural Society, a past-president of the Hawke’s Bay Gladiolus Society and sits on the executive of the Hawke’s Bay Rose Society. In a little more than eight years as the 2YZ Garden Expert Mr. Bastion has dealt with, a wide variety of problems. Questions and exhibits come in from listeners in a regular flow. A great many of these can be answered from Mr. Bas-
tion’s own considerable knowledge of gardening-otherwise he goes to his reference books or discusses the problem raised with other experts in the district. In working hours during the week Mr. Bastion is Superintendent of the Napier toll room of the Post and Telegraph Department.
