WILD LIFE

ONE DAY AT TETON MARSH, by Sally " Carrighar; Michael Joseph, English price 1 "HIS is a delightful book about wild life in a marsh near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The effect of a day of storm, the arrival of winter, on the inhabitants of the marsh-animals, fish, birds and ‘insects-is graphically told, Miss Carrighar has a remarkable gift for conveying the grace and delight of movement in water and in the air. She gives exyilarating descriptions of the enjoyment of otter, mink, trout and scud in the ‘lilt and swing" of water, and their instinetive caution in search of food and shelter in the beaver-made pond. There are vivid. portraits of the osprey, who dives for fish three times a day, of the American merganser (a duck) hicing from her young, and of the swan in flight with his cygnets trumpeting to his sick mate on the pond. Each chapter brings fresh concern for the immediate fate of the population of the draining marsh, which depends on whether the beaver will abandon the marsh or repair the dam. The book has black and white illustrations by George and Patj '
