UP Suzan �i3" dOwn 86 9) GOING DOWN FAR BELOW THE towers and buildings of ICIs giant works at Billingham-on-Tees is a small cinema_ It is located in a mine producing a mineral called anhydrite, which is used to make sulphuric acid, fertilizers and cement by factories 300 ft. above The cinema, where training and safety films are shown; is not the only unusual feature of the mine_ In it have also been installed workshops with Huorescent lighting; a tiled-floor canteen, and diesel and electric machines which run to and fro along high; airy avenues. When the first shaft was sunk in 1927 the mineral was won with picks and shovels. By 1936. however; the mine was completely mechanised and now it is being re-equipped with still more modern plant: This includes loaders whose iron hands fll 14-ton trucks in a matter of minutes ICI has spared no pains to make its anhydrite mine not only safe and productive but & pleasant place to work in.
