Four at One

] DIDN’T expect to hear in Christian Question Box any animated argument about fundamental religious topics, if only because a certain wariness and even hyper-courtesy are almost inevitable when representatives of four different denominations sit round a microphone. But I was surprised at the large measure of agreement they reached on such topics as the Christian’s responsibility to the Have-Nots, the ideal standards of Christian living and the ethics of fund-raising. Even apparent disagreements were the result, not of conflict of ideas, so much as of the rephrasing of similar answers into the special phraseology of the speaker’s church. The accord was quite genuine, not feigned; but I felt that this was because so many questions were put in the half-hour that they could be dealt with only on the surface. On one question, for instancethe nature of the Atonement-I believe that a longer discussion would have revealed considerably less unanimity than actually prevailed. Yet, within the limits set, this lively and articulate panel acquitted themselves admirably, revealing both common sense and Christian courtesy, and allowing a number of quibbleable points to pass in favour of charitable concord.
